Semen Evaluation

As a service to Equitainer users, Hamilton Research Inc. performs computerized motility analyses at 24-hour and 48-hour post collection.

Please note: We will only accept samples for evaluations that are shipped in either the Equitainer I or Equitainer II.

What the Evaluation Includes

Using the Hamilton Thorne Research IVOS sperm analysis system, we will evaluate your extended semen sample for the following parameters:

  • Motility
  • Progressive Motility
  • Total Sperm Count
  • Sperm Concentration
  • Velocity (three types)
  • Linearity
  • Straightness

Procedure

1) Call our office at 800-367-0266 or 978-468-4460 to schedule the evaluation.

2) Collect the stallion's semen as usual. For best results, it is advised that the stallion has been collected at least once in the past 72 hours, but not within the past 24 hours. If it is the beginning of breeding season, the stallion should be "cleaned out" by collecting several times over the course of a week.

3) Extend the semen and package in either an Equitainer I or Equitainer II.

4) Completely fill out the Semen Evaluation Request form. It is important that we have this information for the evaluation.

5) Place the completed Semen Evaluation Request form inside the Equitainer. If paying by check, also enclose payment.

6) Ship the Equitainer I or II by overnight delivery (Fedex, UPS, DHL) to arrive by 10:00 a.m.

Restrictions

1) Shipments must be made in either an Equitainer I or Equitainer II.

2) All evaluations must be scheduled with our office prior to shipping.

3) Evaluations are performed Tuesday through Friday. Thus collections and shipments must be made Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday in order to allow time for a 48-hour evaluation.

4) A fully completed Semen Evaluation Request form must be completed and sent with the shipment.

5) Shipment must be made by a door-to-door carrier. We will not pick up shipments at the airport.

Cost/Payment

Cost of the evaluation is $50 and includes both the 24-hour and 48-hour evaluation and return shipping of the Equitainer by UPS Ground.

Payment may be made by Visa or Mastercard or a check for the full amount may be enclosed with the shipment. Payment information must be received with the shipment.
